How to Activate Your Starlink Mini and Switch to Standby Mode in Australia
A step-by-step guide to activating your Starlink Mini without paying more than you need to - whether you bought from Starlink directly, a retailer, or got the free Residential Max Mini.
Last updated: March 2026
One of the most common questions in the Starlink Mini Users Australia Facebook group (40,000+ members) is some version of: "I just bought a Starlink Mini but I don't need it yet - can I activate it straight onto Standby Mode for $15/month instead of paying $85 or $210?"
The short answer: yes, you can - but the timing matters. Multiple community members have confirmed that you can activate a Starlink Mini directly onto Standby Mode by changing your plan before powering on the dish for the first time. The exact steps depend on how you bought it.
The Three Purchase Paths
Before we get into the details, here's a quick overview of the three ways Australians typically get a Starlink Mini, and how each one affects your activation options.
| Purchase Method | Auto-Activation? | Can Activate on Standby? | Time Pressure |
|---|---|---|---|
| Direct from Starlink | Yes - 7 days after delivery | Yes - change plan to Standby before first power-on | Moderate - 7-day window |
| Retailer (JB Hi-Fi, Bunnings, Officeworks, etc.) | No | Yes - change plan to Standby before first power-on | None - activate whenever you want |
| Residential Max free Mini | Ships on Standby | Yes - starts on Standby by default | None |

Path 1: Bought Directly from Starlink
When you purchase a Starlink Mini from starlink.com, your account is created at checkout and the kit is linked to you as soon as it ships. Starlink tracks delivery, and you have a 7-day window to take action.
Already Linked to Your Account
When you buy directly from Starlink, the kit is linked to your account upon shipment. You activate through the Starlink app or your account dashboard when you first plug in - there's no need to visit starlink.com/activate (that's only for retail purchases).
The 7-Day Auto-Activation Policy
As of February 2026, Starlink gives you 7 days from delivery to manually activate your Mini. If you don't activate it within that window, your service will automatically activate on the 7th day and your first bill will be charged.
This is a recent change - it was previously 30 days. Several members in our Facebook group were caught off guard by the shorter timeframe.
What plan does it default to? If you didn't select a plan during purchase and the 7-day auto-activation kicks in, your standalone Mini will default to Roam 100GB at $85/month. It will not default to Roam Unlimited ($210).
Tip: Bought from JB Hi-Fi, Bunnings, or Officeworks? No auto-activation timer applies. You can keep it in the box as long as you want and activate whenever you're ready.
Warning: Direct Starlink purchases auto-activate 7 days after delivery onto Roam 100GB ($85/month). Change your plan to Standby in your account before powering on the dish to avoid the charge.
Can You Activate Directly onto Standby?
Yes - if you change your plan before powering on the dish for the first time.
Multiple community members have confirmed this approach works (as recently as January 2026):
- Purchase the Mini from starlink.com (a Roam plan is selected at checkout)
- After placing the order - while the dish is shipping or after it arrives but before you plug it in - log into your Starlink account via the app or website
- Change the subscription from Roam to Standby
- Power on and activate the dish - it activates on Standby at $15/month
The key is timing: you must change the plan before first power-on. Once the dish activates, you are on whatever plan is set at that moment. If you change to Standby before powering on, it activates on Standby. If you leave it on Roam, it activates on Roam.
Important: This approach has been confirmed by multiple users in the Starlink Mini Users Australia community, including users with referral credits applied to their accounts. However, Starlink could change this behaviour at any time. If you try this and it doesn't work, contact Starlink support.
What to Do
The smart approach for direct purchases:
- As soon as your order is placed, log into your Starlink account and change the plan from Roam to Standby
- When the dish arrives, power it on - it should activate on Standby at $15/month
- If you want to use it straight away, upgrade to Roam when you're ready - upgrades take effect immediately with a pro-rata charge
If you miss the window and activate on Roam, immediately schedule the downgrade to Standby Mode for your billing anniversary date. Use our comprehensive Plan Change Calculator to see exactly what the charges will be.
Path 2: Bought from a Retailer
If you purchased your Starlink Mini from JB Hi-Fi, Bunnings, Officeworks, or any other authorised retailer, the activation process is different - and more flexible.
No Auto-Activation Timer
The 7-day auto-activation policy does not apply to retail purchases. When you buy from a retailer, the kit is in a "detached" state - Starlink has no idea when it was purchased or who owns it. There are no charges until you manually activate.
This means you can buy a Starlink Mini, keep it in the box for weeks or months, and activate it only when you're ready. This is one of the key advantages of buying from a retailer if you don't need the Mini immediately.
1-Hour Free Access on First Plug-In
When you first plug in a retail-purchased Mini, you get one hour of full internet access to complete the activation and sign-up process. This is full-speed internet, not just access to the Starlink website - though you should use it to get activated rather than browsing.
If the hour expires before you've finished activating, the access ends and you'll need another internet source (like a mobile hotspot) to complete setup.
Tip: Have your details ready before you plug in. Download the Starlink app, have your email and payment information sorted, and know which plan you want to select. Don't waste the hour figuring things out.
Can You Activate Directly onto Standby?
Yes - using the same approach as direct purchases. Set up your Starlink account, select a Roam plan to create the subscription, then change the plan to Standby before powering on the dish for the first time. Community members have confirmed this works for retail purchases as well.
What to Do
- Keep the Mini in the box until you're ready - there's no rush
- When you're ready, create your Starlink account and set up your subscription
- Change the plan to Standby before plugging in the dish
- Activate via starlink.com/activate or the Starlink app during the 1-hour free access window
- The dish should activate on Standby at $15/month
The big advantage with retail is timing. There's no 7-day auto-activation pressure, so you can take your time getting everything set up correctly.
Path 3: Residential Max Free Mini
If you're on Starlink Residential Max ($150/month), you may be eligible for a free Starlink Mini as a rental. This is a completely different activation path.
Ships on Standby by Default
The Residential Max free Mini arrives on Standby Mode ($15/month) by default. You don't need to select a Roam plan first. This is the simplest path to Standby from day one.
Half-Price Roam Plans
When you're ready to use your Mini for travel, Residential Max customers get Roam plans at half price:
- Roam 100GB: $42.50/month (instead of $85)
- Roam Unlimited: $105/month (instead of $210)
Immediate Standby Switching
Residential Max bundled Minis also have an advantage when switching back to Standby. The "Now" option is available for switching to Standby Mode immediately - you don't have to wait until your billing anniversary date. This option is not available on standalone Roam Minis.
This means Residential Max customers can upgrade to a Roam plan for a trip, then switch straight back to Standby the day they get home - no waiting for the billing cycle to end. You'll lose the remaining paid time on the Roam plan with no refund, but you stop the higher charges immediately.
Switching to Standby: How It Works
Once you're on an active Roam plan and want to switch to Standby, the process depends on your Mini type.
Standalone Roam Minis
- Log into your Starlink account (website or app)
- Go to your subscriptions and select "Manage Service Plan"
- Select Standby Mode ($15/month)
- Choose the "Date" option - this schedules the change for the end of your current billing cycle
- Your Roam plan stays active until your billing anniversary date, then Standby kicks in
Important: The "Now" option for immediate switching to Standby is not available on standalone Roam Minis. You must wait until the end of your billing cycle. Schedule it as soon as you know you want to switch - you can always cancel the pending change if your plans change.
Residential Max Bundled Minis
- Log into your Starlink account (website or app)
- Go to your subscriptions and select "Manage Service Plan"
- Select Standby Mode ($15/month)
- Choose "Now" to switch immediately, or "Date" to schedule it for your billing anniversary
If you choose "Now," you switch to Standby immediately and lose the remaining time on your Roam plan with no refund. If you choose "Date," your Roam plan stays active until the billing cycle ends.
Note: The "Now" option becomes unavailable after you've made an immediate plan change in the current billing cycle. You can still make additional "Date" changes, but only one "Now" change per cycle.
What Standby Mode Actually Gets You
At $15/month, Standby Mode is not "nothing." You get:
- Unlimited low-speed data at approximately 0.5 Mbps - enough for WiFi calling, text messages, email, basic web browsing, and weather apps
- Firmware updates - these download at full speed (not throttled to 0.5 Mbps) and don't count towards any data. Power up your Mini occasionally and it will update itself automatically
- Instant reactivation - upgrade to a Roam plan at any time, even from a dead zone with no mobile coverage
- Account stays active - no risk of losing your service line or facing potential reactivation charges

Smart Strategies to Minimise Costs
The Standby-First Approach (All Purchase Paths)
The cheapest way to activate any Starlink Mini is to change your plan to Standby before powering on the dish. This has been confirmed by multiple community members and works for both direct and retail purchases. The steps are simple: set up your account, change the plan to Standby, then power on and activate.
If You Don't Need the Mini Yet
Buy from a retailer. No auto-activation timer means no charges until you're ready. You can keep it in the box for as long as you want. When a trip is coming up, set up your account, put it on Standby, and activate. Upgrade to Roam only when you actually need the speed.
If You Bought Direct and Haven't Activated Yet
You have 7 days from delivery before auto-activation. Log into your account immediately and change the plan to Standby before plugging in the dish. This avoids the $85 Roam charge entirely.
If You Already Activated on Roam
Schedule the downgrade to Standby immediately - it takes effect at the end of your current billing cycle. Use your Plan Change Calculator to see the exact costs. Make the most of that paid month - set up your mount, test your power cable, run firmware updates, and check for obstructions.
Time Your Activation
If you bought from a retailer and have a trip planned, activate your Mini about a week before you leave. This gives you time to set up, test, and troubleshoot at home (where you have other internet as backup) while still getting most of your paid month's usage on the actual trip.
Consider Residential Max
If you already have Starlink Residential at home, upgrading to Residential Max ($150/month) gives you a free Mini that starts on Standby, half-price Roam plans, and the flexibility to switch between Roam and Standby immediately. For frequent travellers, the maths often works out better than a standalone Mini.

Getting your Starlink Mini onto Standby as cheaply as possible is now straightforward regardless of how you bought it. Change the plan to Standby before powering on the dish for the first time, and it activates at $15/month. Retail still gives you the most flexibility with no time pressure, and Residential Max gives you the best ongoing deal with half-price Roam and instant plan switching.
